The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has concluded arrangements for the 2027 general elections, finalising its election timetable despite delays in the passage of the amended Electoral Act by the National Assembly (NASS).

INEC gave the assurance while addressing concerns over the slow legislative process surrounding ongoing amendments to Nigeria’s electoral laws. The commission stated that preparations for the 2027 polls are progressing in line with its constitutional mandate and existing legal framework.

According to the electoral body, early planning remains critical to the successful conduct of elections, stressing that it cannot afford to delay operational preparations while awaiting legislative action. INEC noted that although the amended Electoral Act would introduce improvements, the absence of its passage will not stall preparations for voter registration, logistics, election materials, and personnel training.

INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, has consistently maintained that the commission must work with the law currently in force, while making room for adjustments should the National Assembly eventually pass the amendments and the President gives assent.

The commission further emphasised that any new provisions introduced by the amended Act, once signed into law, would be seamlessly incorporated into its operational plans, provided they do not conflict with the election timeline.

INEC also called on lawmakers to expedite action on the Electoral Act amendments, noting that timely legal reforms are essential to strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process and improving public confidence in elections.

The 2027 general elections will mark another critical milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey, with INEC reaffirming its commitment to conducting free, fair, credible, and transparent polls across the country.
