The International Broadcasters Association of Nigeria (IBAN) has demanded a public apology from the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, over a controversial remark directed at journalist Seun Okinbaloye.
Wike was quoted during a broadcast as saying, “If there was any way to break the screen, I would have shot him,” in reaction to the journalist’s interviewing style on the Politics Today programme.
IBAN described the comment as inappropriate and potentially dangerous, warning that such statements could be interpreted as a threat against media professionals and press freedom.
The association called on the minister to retract the statement and issue an unreserved apology, stressing the need for public officials to uphold responsible communication, especially when addressing members of the media.
IBAN also warned that failure to address the issue could lead to a boycott or other actions by media stakeholders, as part of efforts to protect journalists and maintain professional standards.
The development has sparked conversations about press freedom, media ethics and the relationship between public office holders and journalists.
Observers say the situation underscores the importance of respectful engagement between political leaders and the media in a democratic society.
