Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has dismissed concerns that Nigeria is drifting toward a one-party system, stating that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is simply gaining ground due to its performance under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership.

Speaking to journalists after a meeting with the President at the State House, Sule emphasized that growing political dominance does not equate to the collapse of multi-party democracy.

“There is no way we can become a one-party state. No matter what happens, there will always be opposition. In fact, we don’t want a one-party state—we just want to be the dominant party,” he said.

Governor Sule attributed the wave of defections to the APC’s growing appeal, which he said stems from the administration’s bold reforms, especially in the economy and agriculture.

“It’s a reflection of our party’s performance and the achievements of Mr. President,” he noted. “We’ve seen reforms like the unification of exchange rates, removal of fuel subsidies, and progress in the power sector. The emphasis on skill acquisition and agriculture is particularly commendable—these are reforms that directly impact the people.”

He reiterated that in any democracy, parties strive to lead and win elections, but that doesn’t mean other political parties will disappear.

Sule’s comments come amid a wave of high-profile defections from opposition parties, prompting speculation about the future of political competition in Nigeria.
