Garba Shehu, a former presidential spokesperson, has dismissed recent comments made by Femi Adesina regarding the late President Muhammadu Buhari’s frequent medical trips abroad.

Speaking on Inside Sources, a Channels Television programme, Shehu clarified that Buhari’s regular visits for treatment overseas were not due to a lack of faith in Nigeria’s healthcare system. Instead, he said they were a matter of personal preference and continuity of care with long-trusted foreign medical professionals.

This statement comes in response to Adesina’s earlier remarks, where he claimed Buhari might have died had he depended solely on Nigerian hospitals, citing inadequate medical capacity in the country at the time.

Shehu disagreed with that perspective, emphasizing that Buhari was never disconnected from the Nigerian medical system. According to him, the former President had a Nigerian personal physician and was routinely attended to by medical consultants at the State House Clinic.

“It is incorrect to suggest that Buhari shut himself off from Nigerian healthcare,” Shehu stated. “He had a chief personal physician who was Nigerian, and the State House Clinic was led by a highly experienced consultant.”
