Siminalayi Fubara, the Governor of Rivers State, has called on the Ogoni people to embrace unity and peaceful engagement as a pathway to lasting development, pledging his support for renewed dialogue between Ogoni stakeholders and the Federal Government.
The governor made the call on Ogoni Day, a symbolic event that commemorates the struggle of the Ogoni people for environmental justice, self-determination, and sustainable development in the oil-rich Niger Delta region.
Fubara stressed that unity among the Ogoni people remains critical at a time when opportunities for meaningful engagement with the Federal Government are emerging. He noted that internal divisions could weaken the collective voice of Ogoniland and undermine efforts aimed at addressing decades-long environmental degradation, economic neglect, and social injustice.
According to the governor, dialogue — rather than confrontation — offers the most realistic path toward resolving long-standing grievances, including issues surrounding oil pollution, gas flaring, and the implementation of development initiatives in Ogoni communities.
He urged leaders of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) and other stakeholders to prioritise constructive engagement, transparency, and inclusiveness in their dealings with the Federal Government, adding that Rivers State would continue to play a supportive role in facilitating peace and progress in the area.
Fubara reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to reconciliation, environmental restoration, and people-centred development, assuring the Ogoni people that their concerns remain a priority on the state’s development agenda.
He concluded by calling on all Ogoni sons and daughters, both at home and in the diaspora, to set aside differences and work together for the collective good of the region.
