FIX YOUR BUILDINGS OR FACE GOVERNMENT ACTION — ABIA WARNS LANDLORDS
The Abia State Government has issued a strong warning to landlords in Umuahia, directing owners of dilapidated and poorly maintained buildings to carry out urgent repairs or face enforcement actions.
The warning was issued as part of the state’s urban renewal and environmental safety drive aimed at improving the outlook of the capital city and ensuring public safety. According to government officials, many buildings within Umuahia have become eyesores due to neglect, peeling paint, structural defects, and poor sanitation, posing risks to residents and passersby.
Landlords whose properties require renovation have been given a four-week ultimatum to repaint, repair structural damages, and generally give their buildings a facelift. The government stressed that the directive applies to both residential and commercial properties across the city.
Authorities warned that failure to comply within the stipulated timeframe would attract sanctions, which may include sealing of affected buildings, fines, or other actions permitted under existing environmental and urban planning laws.
The state government noted that the move is not intended to punish property owners but to encourage responsible property management and improve the overall aesthetics and livability of Umuahia.
Residents have been urged to cooperate with relevant agencies, while landlords are advised to act promptly to avoid penalties.
