The Federal Government has charged information officers across ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) to prioritise networking, coordination and relationship-building as key tools for strengthening public trust in government communication.

Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, gave the charge while addressing information officers at a capacity-building session organised by the ministry.

According to the minister, effective governance goes beyond policy formulation and implementation, stressing that clear, timely and credible communication is essential for citizens to understand government programmes and policies.

Idris noted that information officers play a strategic role as the bridge between government and the people, urging them to work collaboratively rather than in isolation. He said strong professional networks among information managers would help eliminate misinformation, improve message consistency and enhance public confidence.

“You must build strong relationships, coordinate effectively and communicate responsibly. Trust is earned when government speaks with one voice and with clarity,” the minister said.

He further emphasised the need for information officers to adapt to the evolving media landscape, particularly the rise of digital platforms and social media, which demand speed, accuracy and professionalism.

The minister also called on officers to uphold ethical standards, verify information before dissemination and engage constructively with the media and the public.

The session, which featured presentations and interactive discussions, focused on modern communication strategies, crisis management and inter-agency collaboration aimed at improving government information delivery nationwide.
