The Federal Government on Wednesday approved six major road projects across different parts of the country as part of efforts to improve transportation infrastructure and boost economic activities nationwide.

Minister of Works, David Umahi, disclosed this while briefing journalists after the Federal Executive Council meeting in Abuja. According to him, the projects are aimed at accelerating development, improving connectivity between major cities and ensuring long-term durability of critical road networks.

Umahi explained that one of the key projects approved is the reconstruction of the Ibadan–Ife–Ilesa Road. He noted that the project had originally been awarded by the previous administration but recorded little progress before the current government came into office.

According to the minister, when President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assumed office, the government reviewed the project due to delays and other challenges affecting its execution. As a result, the contract was re-evaluated and subsequently re-awarded to ensure that work proceeds more effectively and the road is completed within a reasonable timeframe.

Umahi also revealed that the Kano–Kongolam Road project will undergo significant redesign and upgrade. He said the project, which was initially planned as a standard asphalt road, has now been converted into a more durable three-lane concrete carriageway.

He explained that the upgraded design would improve the road’s lifespan and capacity, particularly given the heavy traffic and economic importance of the route. The minister added that the new design also includes modern infrastructure features such as solar-powered streetlights and closed-circuit television (CCTV) installations to enhance safety and security along the corridor.

According to him, the approval of the projects reflects the federal government’s commitment to building resilient infrastructure that can support economic growth and improve the movement of goods and people across the country.

Umahi further stated that the government is prioritising concrete pavement technology in many road constructions because it is more durable and cost-effective in the long run compared to traditional asphalt roads.

The minister assured Nigerians that the Ministry of Works would closely monitor the implementation of the projects to ensure quality delivery and timely completion.

The newly approved road projects are expected to create jobs, reduce travel time and strengthen connectivity between key commercial and agricultural hubs across the country.
