FG approves 100% gratuity for retiring civil servants
The Federal Government has approved the implementation of a new Exit Benefit Scheme that will grant retiring federal civil servants a gratuity equivalent to 100 per cent of their total annual emolument.
The approval was granted during a meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) as part of efforts to improve welfare for workers in the federal civil service.
Under the new policy, eligible civil servants who retire from service will receive a one-time gratuity payment equal to their annual salary package, in addition to their pension benefits.
Government officials said the initiative is designed to ensure that workers who have served the nation for decades can retire with financial stability and dignity.
According to the government, the scheme is also expected to address long-standing concerns about inadequate retirement benefits for civil servants and strengthen confidence in the public service system.
Officials explained that the exit benefit will be calculated based on the total annual emolument, which includes basic salary, allowances, and other approved benefits attached to a civil servant’s position.
The new gratuity policy forms part of broader reforms aimed at modernising the civil service and improving the welfare of government workers.
The government noted that the policy will encourage greater commitment and productivity among civil servants while providing assurance that their service to the nation will be rewarded upon retirement.
Analysts say the move could help improve morale in the public sector, where concerns about retirement benefits have been a major issue for many workers.
However, experts also noted that the government will need to ensure proper funding and transparent implementation of the scheme to avoid delays in payment or administrative challenges.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to reforms that will strengthen the civil service and improve the welfare of workers across the country.
