Ex-Lagos gov candidate dumps PDP Former Lagos State governorship
The candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Funso Doherty, has resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing the party’s prolonged internal crisis.
In a statement announcing his exit, Doherty expressed concern over persistent leadership disputes and factional tensions within the PDP, which he said have hindered its effectiveness as a viable opposition platform.
According to him, the ongoing instability has made it difficult for the party to present a united front or effectively engage in the democratic process. He noted that his decision was informed by a desire to align with a political environment that supports clarity of purpose and cohesive leadership.
Doherty, who previously contested the Lagos governorship election, emphasised the need for political parties to maintain internal discipline and organisational stability to gain public trust and deliver meaningful governance alternatives.
Political observers say his resignation reflects broader challenges facing opposition parties, particularly in managing internal disagreements and maintaining unity ahead of future elections.
He is yet to formally announce his next political move, but analysts suggest that his decision could signal further realignments within Nigeria’s political landscape as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
