The All Progressives Congress (APC) has stated that Nigeria’s Electoral Act is a product of the National Assembly and not a law created by the ruling party, amid growing political debates ahead of future elections.

Speaking on the matter, an APC spokesman explained that the Electoral Act was drafted, debated, and passed by members of the National Assembly, who represent different political parties across the country. According to him, the law is therefore a national legislative product and not a partisan instrument designed to favour the ruling party.

The spokesman stressed that lawmakers from both the ruling party and opposition parties participated in the legislative process that produced the Electoral Act before it was eventually assented to by the President. He added that portraying the law as an APC creation is misleading and undermines the democratic role of the legislature.

He also urged opposition parties and critics to respect the legislative process and focus on strengthening democratic institutions rather than politicising laws meant to guide elections in the country.

The APC maintained that the Electoral Act was designed to improve transparency, credibility, and accountability in Nigeria’s electoral system. The party called on political stakeholders to work within the framework of the law while preparing for upcoming elections.

The clarification comes amid ongoing political discussions and criticisms surrounding electoral reforms and how the law is being implemented by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
