Electoral Act: I’d have joined Obi to protest at NASS — El-Rufai
Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has revealed that he would have taken part in the protest led by former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, at the National Assembly of Nigeria if he had been in the country at the time.
El-Rufai made the disclosure while reacting to the recent demonstration at the National Assembly, where Obi and his supporters protested aspects of Nigeria’s Electoral Act and broader electoral reforms.
According to El-Rufai, peaceful protests are a legitimate democratic tool and Nigerians—regardless of political differences—have the right to demand transparency, accountability, and improvements to the electoral process. He stressed that concerns around elections should unite political actors rather than divide them.
The protest, led by Obi, called on lawmakers to address perceived loopholes in the Electoral Act, strengthen democratic institutions, and restore public confidence in elections.
