El-Rufai, Malami’s detention cripples ADC
Growing concerns have emerged within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) following the detention and ongoing legal troubles of two prominent figures in the party — former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, and ex-Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami.
Party insiders say the absence of the two influential politicians is beginning to affect internal coordination and strategic planning within the coalition. Several chieftains reportedly fear that the situation could weaken the party’s momentum ahead of major political activities and alliances.
Sources familiar with the party’s operations revealed that members are worried the legal challenges surrounding both men may disrupt leadership structures and slow down grassroots mobilisation efforts.
Malami, who served as Minister of Justice during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, is currently facing trial over alleged financial crimes. In December 2025, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned him alongside members of his family before a Federal High Court in Abuja.
The charges reportedly involve allegations of money laundering amounting to about N8.7 billion. Prosecutors accused the defendants of conspiracy and concealing proceeds of unlawful activities, claims which form part of a multi-count charge filed under Nigeria’s Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act.
While legal proceedings continue, political observers note that the cases involving Malami and El-Rufai have intensified debates within the ADC over leadership stability and the future direction of the coalition.
Party stakeholders are said to be weighing their options as they seek to maintain unity and keep preparations on track despite the ongoing controversies surrounding two of their high-profile members.
