EFCC hands over ₦3.93bn to NNPC, says funds recovered from ‘certain individuals’
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has handed over a total sum of ₦3.93 billion to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, stating that the funds were recovered during investigations involving individuals linked to the oil sector.
The anti-graft agency disclosed this in a statement, noting that the official presentation was made at its headquarters in Abuja. The handover was carried out on behalf of the EFCC’s Executive Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, by the Secretary to the Commission, Mohammed Hammajoda.
According to the commission, the recovered funds represent proceeds traced to alleged financial misconduct involving certain individuals connected to operations within the petroleum industry. It added that the restitution forms part of ongoing efforts to ensure accountability and recover public resources diverted through corrupt practices.
Officials emphasised that the recovery underscores the agency’s commitment to strengthening transparency in the management of Nigeria’s oil and gas assets. They also reiterated the importance of collaboration between law enforcement institutions and government-owned enterprises in safeguarding national economic interests.
Representatives of NNPC Limited who received the funds commended the EFCC for its efforts, describing the recovery as a positive step towards promoting integrity and responsible stewardship within the energy sector.
The commission assured that investigations into related matters are ongoing and warned that individuals found culpable would face appropriate legal action in line with the law.
