Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro, has expressed concern over the increasing number of defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), suggesting that such moves are driven by self-interest and political survival rather than ideology.

Speaking during an interview on AIT’s Focus Nigeria, the senator representing Benue South noted that recent high-profile defections — including former PDP vice-presidential candidate Ifeanyi Okowa, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, and all PDP members of the House of Representatives from Delta — reflect a troubling trend. Additionally, three PDP senators from Kebbi State have also crossed over to the APC.

Moro implied that some politicians believe joining the APC shields them from accountability, referencing a past statement by an APC chieftain who claimed that anyone who defects to the ruling party has their “sins forgiven.”

“When history fully unfolds, Nigerians will understand the real motives behind these defections,” Moro said. “Many of those leaving the PDP have held powerful positions and seem to fear political irrelevance outside the corridors of power.”
