Credible elections vital to national security — INEC chair
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has stressed that credible and transparent elections are essential for strengthening Nigeria’s democracy and ensuring long-term national security.
Speaking at a public forum on electoral reforms and governance, the INEC boss noted that the integrity of the electoral process plays a critical role in maintaining political stability and public confidence in democratic institutions.
According to him, when citizens trust that elections are free, fair and reflective of the will of the people, it reduces tensions, prevents post-election conflicts and promotes peaceful transitions of power. He added that credible elections also help discourage political violence and safeguard the country’s unity.
The INEC chairman highlighted ongoing efforts by the commission to improve electoral processes, including the deployment of technology, enhanced voter education programmes and closer collaboration with security agencies.
He emphasised the need for all stakeholders — political parties, candidates, civil society organisations and voters — to uphold democratic values and adhere strictly to electoral laws and guidelines.
The electoral chief further called for sustained reforms to strengthen institutional independence, improve logistics and ensure accountability in the management of elections across the country.
Observers at the event agreed that strengthening electoral credibility remains a key factor in addressing broader governance challenges and fostering national development.
