A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), sitting in Maitama, has imposed a fine of ₦500,000 on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following what it described as persistent requests for adjournments in the ongoing trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele.

The trial judge ruled that the repeated delays had slowed the progress of proceedings and undermined the timely administration of justice. The court subsequently ordered the anti-graft agency to pay the fine as a form of sanction and directed that the case should proceed without unnecessary interruptions.

During the court session, counsel to the EFCC had reportedly sought another adjournment, citing the need to secure additional witnesses and complete preparations for the prosecution’s case. However, the defence team opposed the request, arguing that the repeated postponements were prejudicial to the accused and contrary to the principle of fair hearing within a reasonable time.

In its ruling, the court emphasised the importance of diligence and readiness in criminal prosecution, noting that prolonged delays could erode public confidence in the justice system. The judge warned that further unwarranted adjournment requests might attract stricter consequences.

Emefiele, who is facing multiple charges relating to alleged financial misconduct during his tenure as CBN governor, has consistently maintained his innocence.

The case was subsequently adjourned to a later date for continuation of hearing, with the court urging all parties to ensure full preparedness for the next sitting.
