Controversy as Wike-backed PDP faction elects Plateau exco
Fresh controversy has emerged within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Plateau State following the election of a new state executive committee by a faction reportedly aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
The faction announced the emergence of Peter Tongshep as state chairman during a congress held amid disagreements over the legitimacy of party structures in the state. Supporters of the new leadership described the exercise as necessary to reposition the party and strengthen internal organisation ahead of future political contests.
However, rival party stakeholders have questioned the legality of the congress, insisting that the process did not follow recognised party procedures. They warned that the development could deepen divisions within the PDP at a time when unity is considered crucial for electoral competitiveness.
Political observers say the dispute reflects broader tensions within the party at both state and national levels, where competing interests and leadership struggles have led to parallel meetings and conflicting claims of authority.
Party members have called on the national leadership of the PDP to intervene and provide clarity on the status of the newly elected executives in order to prevent further escalation of the crisis.
Meanwhile, analysts note that unresolved factional disputes could affect the party’s grassroots mobilisation and overall strategy as preparations gradually begin for upcoming elections.
