The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Surulere Local Government Area of Lagos State has petitioned Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, raising concerns over what it described as the marginalisation of Christians in political leadership within the area.

In a letter dated March 10, 2026, signed by the Surulere CAN Chairman, James Akingboye, alongside nine other officials, the association said the situation is troubling and could threaten peaceful coexistence if not addressed.

According to the group, out of 13 political office holders representing Surulere at both federal and state levels, only one—Desmond Elliot, a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly—is a Christian. The association argued that this imbalance raises concerns about fairness, inclusion and equal representation in governance.

CAN urged the state government to take necessary steps to ensure inclusivity and equitable participation of all religious groups in political appointments and elective positions. It emphasised that diversity and balance are essential for maintaining harmony in a multi-religious society like Nigeria.

The association also called for dialogue and engagement with relevant stakeholders to address the issue and prevent potential tensions within the community.

Observers say the petition highlights ongoing conversations around representation, inclusiveness and identity in Nigeria’s political landscape.
