President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday officially decorated Tunji Disu with his new rank as Acting Inspector-General of Police during a brief ceremony held at the State House in Abuja.

The event, which took place at about 4pm inside the President’s office, was attended by senior government officials, top police officers, and aides of the presidency. The decoration formally confirms Disu’s assumption of leadership of the Nigeria Police Force in an acting capacity following recent developments within the police hierarchy.

Speaking shortly after the decoration, President Tinubu charged the new acting police chief to prioritise professionalism, discipline, and intelligence-driven policing across the country. He emphasised the need for renewed efforts in tackling insecurity, strengthening public trust, and improving the welfare and morale of officers nationwide.

According to sources present at the ceremony, the President also stressed that the police must remain neutral and uphold democratic values, especially as political activities gradually intensify ahead of future electoral cycles.

In his remarks, Disu expressed gratitude to the President for the confidence placed in him, pledging to work with dedication and integrity. He assured Nigerians that his leadership would focus on strengthening operational efficiency, enhancing community policing strategies, and promoting transparency within the force.

Security analysts say the appointment comes at a crucial time, as the police face mounting expectations to address rising crime concerns and restore public confidence. They noted that Disu’s experience in intelligence and investigative operations could shape the direction of policing reforms in the coming months.

More details about policy priorities and possible structural changes within the force are expected to emerge in the coming days as the acting IGP settles into office.
