Breaking: Tambuwal Quits PDP Over Internal Crisis, Defects to ADC
Former Sokoto State governor and serving senator, Aminu Tambuwal, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing unresolved internal crises within the opposition party.
Tambuwal announced his decision in a statement on Wednesday, saying the lingering leadership disputes and factional divisions within the PDP had made it increasingly difficult for the party to function as a cohesive political force ahead of future elections.
According to him, his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is driven by the need to join efforts aimed at building a stronger and more united opposition platform capable of challenging the ruling party.
The development marks a significant shift in Nigeria’s opposition politics, as Tambuwal is considered one of the influential northern political figures within the PDP structure. His move is expected to further deepen realignments already taking shape among opposition leaders ahead of the 2027 general election.
Political observers say Tambuwal’s defection could trigger fresh reactions within the PDP and potentially influence other stakeholders who are weighing their political future amid the party’s internal wrangling.
The PDP has yet to issue an official response to the development, while the ADC leadership has reportedly welcomed Tambuwal’s entry, describing it as a boost to the party’s growing coalition efforts.
Tambuwal had previously contested the PDP presidential ticket and played key roles in the party’s national decision-making processes over the years.
More details are expected to emerge as political consultations and alignments intensify across party lines.
