The Senate has approved President Bola Tinubu’s request to secure a $6 billion loan, in a move aimed at supporting key government projects and economic initiatives.
The approval was granted just a few hours after Senate President Godswill Akpabio read the President’s request letter during plenary, underscoring the urgency attached to the proposal.
Lawmakers reportedly considered the loan request and its intended applications before giving their nod, with assurances that the funds would be directed toward critical sectors of the economy, including infrastructure and development programmes.
Government officials have maintained that the borrowing is part of broader efforts to bridge funding gaps, stimulate economic growth and implement ongoing reforms.
However, the approval is expected to generate public debate, particularly around Nigeria’s rising debt profile and the need for transparency in the utilisation of borrowed funds.
Economic analysts say effective management and accountability in deploying the loan will be crucial to ensuring it delivers tangible benefits for citizens.
