World football’s governing body, FIFA, has dismissed Nigeria’s appeal challenging the eligibility of a DR Congo player in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier, effectively bringing the case to an end.
The decision means the original match result remains unchanged, dealing a major blow to Nigeria’s hopes of salvaging their World Cup qualification campaign through administrative means.
Nigeria, through its football authorities, had petitioned FIFA following concerns that a player fielded by DR Congo was ineligible to participate in the qualifier. The appeal sought sanctions against DR Congo and a possible reversal of the result in Nigeria’s favour.
However, after reviewing submissions from all parties, FIFA ruled that the appeal did not satisfy the requirements needed to overturn the outcome of the match. The world football body found no sufficient breach of its regulations to justify disciplinary action or points adjustment.
With the ruling, Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup via an administrative decision are now officially over, leaving the Super Eagles to rely solely on results on the pitch going forward.
The decision has sparked disappointment among Nigerian football fans, many of whom had hoped FIFA would rule in the country’s favour and reopen the qualification race.
As of the time of filing this report, FIFA has maintained that its verdict is final, and no further appeal process has been announced.
