Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned the attack on the office of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Ubima, located in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, describing the incident as a dangerous threat to Nigeria’s democratic process.
In a statement issued on Friday, Atiku expressed deep concern over the development, noting that violence against political institutions undermines democratic values and the rule of law.
He said the attack on the ADC office raises serious questions about political tolerance and the safety of opposition parties in the country.
According to him, Nigeria’s democracy can only thrive in an environment where political actors operate freely without intimidation, harassment, or destruction of property.
The former vice president therefore called on security agencies to immediately launch a thorough and independent investigation into the incident to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.
Atiku warned that failure to properly investigate and prosecute the perpetrators could embolden further attacks on political organisations across the country.
He also urged political leaders and their supporters to embrace peace and respect democratic principles, stressing that political competition should never descend into violence.
The ADC office in Ubima reportedly suffered damage during the attack, though details about the perpetrators and the extent of the destruction remain unclear at the time of filing this report.
Atiku reaffirmed the need for authorities to ensure the protection of political parties and democratic institutions as Nigeria continues to strengthen its democratic system.
