Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has strongly condemned the arrest and continued detention of social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Atiku described the action as a clear example of growing authoritarianism under the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

Confirming the arrest, EFCC spokesman Dele Oyewale revealed that Otse was taken into custody after several individuals filed petitions accusing him of cyberstalking.

In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), Atiku accused the Nigerian government of using security agencies as tools to suppress dissent and intimidate critics. He called the detention of VeryDarkMan a “blatant abuse of power” by the Tinubu administration, pointing out that the activist has not been formally charged, which he argued is a direct violation of Otse’s constitutional rights.

Atiku further condemned the pattern of attacks on the freedoms of Nigerians, especially those who speak out against the government or align with the political opposition. He criticized the government for double standards, noting that while critics and opposition figures are targeted, individuals with serious corruption allegations remain immune from prosecution.
