Atiku Celebrates Maryam Hassan’s UN Appointment as Global Peace Advocate

Former Vice President and 2023 PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has congratulated renowned Nigerian poet and spoken word artist, Maryam Bukar Hassan — popularly known as Alhanislam — on her appointment as the United Nations Global Advocate for Peace.

In a statement via his official X handle, Atiku praised Hassan as a “gifted poet and fierce voice for justice” whose art has empowered and united people across the globe. He also recalled a past spoken word performance in which Hassan captured his political journey, commending her ability to blend creativity with purpose.

“Her poetry has inspired peace and echoed the hopes of countless youth. Maryam’s elevation is a proud moment for Nigeria and for every young African woman with a dream. Keep soaring,” Atiku wrote.

The UN announced Hassan’s appointment last week, recognizing her longstanding work in promoting peace, education, gender equality, and human rights. She is expected to focus her advocacy on youth empowerment, social cohesion, and dialogue, especially in conflict-affected regions.

Hassan has performed at global platforms such as the African Union and the United Nations Headquarters, earning recognition as a leading African creative using art to drive social change.
