The Kano State Commissioner for Internal Security and Special Services, Ibrahim Umar, has resigned his appointment, becoming the latest member of the State Executive Council to step down following the defection of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to the All Progressives Congress.

Umar disclosed his decision in a resignation letter addressed to the governor and made available to journalists on Monday evening.

In the letter, the commissioner said his resignation was informed by recent political developments in the state, particularly the growing strain between Governor Yusuf and his long-time political mentor, Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso. He noted that the fallout has created divisions within the government and affected unity in the cabinet.

“I write with profound gratitude and a deep sense of duty to formally tender my resignation from my position as the Commissioner for Internal Security and Special Services, Kano State, with immediate effect,” Umar stated.

He expressed appreciation to the governor for the confidence reposed in him, recalling his appointment as Director-General of the Special Services Directorate in June 2023 and his subsequent elevation to commissioner.

“It has been a distinct honour and privilege to be entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring the safety and security of Kano State under your leadership,” he said.

However, Umar explained that the recent turn of events made it difficult for him to continue in office, adding that stepping aside was in the best interest of the state and the administration.

“This decision, though difficult, was taken after careful consideration. I believe it is necessary to preserve stability and allow the government to realign itself in line with its new political direction,” he added.

The former commissioner thanked his colleagues, security agencies and residents of the state for their cooperation during his tenure, while pledging his continued commitment to the peace and progress of Kano State.
