Alex Otti: Labour Party Still a Formidable Force Without Obi
Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has said the Labour Party (LP) remains a formidable political force despite the exit of its former presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Otti made the assertion on Saturday night while addressing members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) at a meeting held in Abuja.
The Abia governor acknowledged that the party has experienced defections in recent months, including the departure of some lawmakers and interim national committee members. However, he maintained that these losses have not weakened the party’s structure or relevance.
According to Otti, political parties are institutions that must be built on ideology, organisation, and grassroots strength rather than dependence on a single individual.
“The Labour Party is bigger than any one person,” he said. “While individuals may come and go, the party remains strong and focused on its mission.”
Otti noted that the LP’s performance in recent elections and its growing acceptance among Nigerians demonstrate that it still commands significant support nationwide. He stressed that the party is undergoing internal reorganisation aimed at strengthening its structures ahead of future electoral contests.
Reacting to Obi’s defection, Otti said the former Anambra State governor was free to pursue his political aspirations wherever he deemed fit, adding that political realignments are normal in a democracy.
Peter Obi officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on December 31, a move that sparked debate about the future of the Labour Party.
Despite this, Otti expressed confidence that the LP would continue to play a significant role in Nigeria’s political landscape, urging party members to remain united and committed to the party’s ideals.
He called on stakeholders to focus on strengthening internal democracy, expanding the party’s base, and presenting credible alternatives to Nigerians, insisting that the Labour Party’s journey is far from over.
