Adeboye Reacts to AFCON Prophecy on Ademola Lookman, Urges Caution Over Sensational Predictions
The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Enoch Adeboye, has weighed in on the growing debate surrounding prophecies in Nigerian football, following a controversial prediction linked to the Super Eagles’ Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign.
Adeboye spoke at a recent programme held at the RCCG Redemption City, where he cautioned Christians against blindly accepting every prophetic declaration without discernment. He warned that many so-called prophecies circulating today are increasingly sensational and may not always align with divine intent.
Although the cleric did not mention any individual by name, his comments were widely interpreted as a response to a prophecy credited to Primate Elijah Ayodele, which went viral ahead of the 2025 AFCON scheduled to take place in Morocco.
According to reports, the prophecy allegedly advised that Super Eagles winger Ademola Lookman should not be included in Nigeria’s squad for the tournament. The prediction sparked intense reactions among football fans and analysts, especially given Lookman’s strong performances for both club and country.
Adeboye, in his remarks, stressed that prophecies should be handled with wisdom, humility, and spiritual maturity. He urged believers to avoid turning prophecy into a tool for fear-mongering or controversy, noting that faith must be guided by discernment rather than hype.
The comments have reignited conversations on the intersection of religion and sports in Nigeria, particularly the influence of prophetic pronouncements on public opinion and national discourse around the Super Eagles and major tournaments like the Africa Cup of Nations.
