Abiodun tasks Ogun monarchs on responsible leadership
Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has urged traditional rulers in the state to lead with humility, integrity, and a strong commitment to promoting good governance at the grassroots while balancing tradition with modern development.
Abiodun made the call in Abeokuta during an orientation workshop organised for 72 newly installed royal fathers across the state. The governor, represented by his Chief of Staff, Dr. Toyin Taiwo, said the theme of the event — “Traditional Rulers: The Harbingers of Good Governance” — highlighted the vital role monarchs play in maintaining peace and progress within their communities.
He said, “This event highlights the important roles royal fathers play in sustaining peace and progress, acting as a bridge between the government and the people. Obas are the moral compasses of their communities and the embodiment of shared values and aspirations.”
The governor urged the monarchs to lead with dignity and serve as examples of selfless leadership, working closely with the government to deliver development across the state.
The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ganiyu Hamzat, said the training was part of resolutions reached at the Ogun State Council of Obas meeting earlier in the year. According to him, the workshop was designed to help new monarchs gain the knowledge needed to exercise authority effectively in the modern era.
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Dr. Rotimiolu Akinlesi, said the government would continue to prioritise capacity building for traditional rulers to support community development.
The Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, commended the state government for organising the training and urged participants to use the experience to strengthen leadership and promote progress in their domains.
A communiqué issued at the end of the workshop stated that 72 newly installed traditional rulers, including 11 First Class Obas, 17 Part II Obas, and 44 coronets, attended the programme. It noted that the training reinforced the importance of traditional institutions in promoting peace and good governance across Ogun State.
