Abia sets new minimum wage: GL 1 step 15 to receive N80,463

The Abia State Government has officially approved a new monthly minimum wage, with workers at Grade Level (GL) 1, Step 15 now set to earn N80,463 following an agreement signed between the state government and organized labor unions.

This development, finalized on Tuesday night after extended negotiations, marks a significant adjustment in employee compensation across the state’s civil service.

During the signing ceremony held at Government House, Governor Alex Otti, represented by Chief of Staff Pastor Caleb Ajagba, reiterated his administration’s dedication to workers’ welfare, with the new minimum wage set at N70,000 for GL 1, Step 1 employees. The agreement also establishes an implementation deadline of October 2024.

According to the document, wage adjustments will be as follows:

GL 1, Step 1: N70,000

GL 1, Step 2: N70,700

GL 1, Step 15: N80,463

GL 10, Step 1: N99,707

GL 10, Step 15: N101,722

GL 17, Step 1: N254,667

GL 17, Step 9: N259,805

In addition to these new rates, consequential adjustments have been established, with increases applied as follows: 5% for GL 1-3, 4% for GL 4-6, 3% for GL 7-10, 2% for GL 12-14, and 1% for GL 15-17.

Governor Otti expressed his commitment to timely salary payments on the 28th of each month, assuring that regular compensation would boost employees’ morale and productivity, benefiting the state’s economy. He commended the patience of labor leaders and reaffirmed that the state’s wage plan aligns with sustainable commitments, especially given the financial burdens inherited from previous administrations.

Labor leaders, including the NLC Chairman Comrade Okoro Ogbonnaya, applauded the agreement, highlighting that it would motivate workers to maximize their efforts. Head of Service Dr. Ngozi Queen Obioma also expressed appreciation, stating that employees were committed to reciprocating the gesture with diligent service.

Signatories of the agreement included government representatives and leaders from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), underscoring a collaborative commitment to improving labor standards in Abia.
