Abbas Unveils Reform to Strengthen Grassroots Governance

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has outlined key reforms being considered in the ongoing review of the 1999 Constitution, with a focus on strengthening grassroots governance and inclusivity.
Abbas made this known on Wednesday at the Citizens’ Roundtable with the Leadership of the House of Representatives held in Owerri, the Imo State capital. He was represented at the event by the House Leader, Prof. Julius Ihonvbere.
According to him, the reforms under review include youth and women empowerment, equitable gender representation, and the recognition of a constitutional role for traditional rulers in governance.
“From focused discussions on appropriation and state policing to deliberations on national security, economic resilience, political inclusion, and gender equity, we have remained committed to aligning our legislative work with the aspirations of the people we serve,” Abbas stated.
He explained that the House was exploring ways to strengthen the authority of traditional rulers by defining their responsibilities in line with democratic principles, noting that such measures would reflect Nigeria’s cultural diversity.
The Speaker further emphasized the importance of devolution of powers, revealing that the House is collaborating with State Assemblies and Local Government Councils to ensure that governance and resources reach the grassroots.
Abbas assured stakeholders that the constitutional review process was designed to capture public perspectives on key legislative priorities, stressing that the reforms would help build stronger institutions and improve inclusive governance across the country.
