TINUBU: YOU CAN’T ASK MOSES TO RETURN TO EGYPT OVER FUEL SUBSIDY
President Bola Tinubu has likened calls for the restoration of Nigeria’s petrol subsidy to asking Moses to return to Egypt, insisting that the country cannot afford to return to the policy.
Tinubu used the biblical reference while responding to critics who have called for the reinstatement of fuel subsidies amid concerns over the rising cost of living and petrol prices.
The president’s position reflects his administration’s continued defence of subsidy removal, which was announced in May 2023 shortly after he assumed office.
The policy ended the government’s previous system of subsidising petrol prices, leading to a significant increase in fuel costs and renewed public debate about its impact on households and businesses.
Supporters of the removal argue that it can reduce government spending on subsidies and free up resources for other priorities. Critics, however, have raised concerns about the financial pressure the policy has placed on Nigerians, particularly low-income households.
Tinubu maintains that restoring the subsidy is not a sustainable option for the country. The debate over the policy continues as Nigerians call for measures to ease economic hardship and improve living standards.
