OYEDELE: FUEL TAXES TO WAIT UNTIL INCOMES IMPROVE
Nigeria will introduce fuel taxes only when the economy stabilises and citizens’ incomes improve, according to the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele.
Oyedele said the timing of any fuel tax would depend on improvements in economic conditions and the ability of Nigerians to cope with additional financial obligations.
The position comes amid ongoing concerns about the cost of living, petrol prices and the impact of economic reforms on households and businesses across the country.
Fuel taxes can provide governments with additional revenue for public spending, but they can also increase transport and distribution costs, potentially affecting the prices of goods and services.
The government’s position suggests that economic stability and improved household incomes would be important considerations before such a tax is introduced.
However, the announcement does not provide a specific date for the introduction of fuel taxes, leaving the timing dependent on future economic conditions and government decisions.
