The Sokoto State Government has defended President Bola Tinubu’s nomination of Professor Mustapha Aliyu as a commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), insisting that the appointment was based on merit.

The state government maintained that Aliyu’s nomination was justified by his qualifications and suitability for the position.

The nomination has drawn attention to the process of appointing electoral commissioners and the importance of ensuring that those entrusted with managing elections meet the required standards.

INEC plays a central role in organising and supervising elections in Nigeria, making the selection of its officials an important issue in the country’s democratic process.

The Sokoto government’s defence comes amid broader discussions about the independence of the electoral body and the need for public confidence in its leadership.

However, the government’s position reflects its assessment of the nominee’s suitability, while the nomination process remains subject to the applicable constitutional and legal requirements.
