Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has defended the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) following reports of an airstrike around Jilli market, stating that the market had been officially closed for about five years.
Zulum explained that the closure was part of measures taken by the state government to curb insurgent activities, as such markets were allegedly being used by Boko Haram elements for logistics and supplies.
According to the governor, the military acted based on intelligence and ongoing security operations in the area, stressing that efforts to combat insurgency must be supported to restore lasting peace in the region.
He reiterated his administration’s commitment to working closely with security agencies, while also emphasising the need to protect civilians and ensure accurate intelligence in operations.
The development has sparked mixed reactions, with concerns raised over civilian safety and the importance of verifying targets in conflict zones.
Observers say the situation highlights the complexities of counter-insurgency operations and the delicate balance between security enforcement and humanitarian considerations.
