Prominent political figures, Pat Utomi and Oby Ezekwesili, have raised concerns over what they describe as attempts to weaken opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In separate remarks, both leaders cautioned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) against actions that could undermine political pluralism and democratic balance in the country.
They argued that a vibrant opposition is essential for accountability, transparency and the overall health of Nigeria’s democracy. According to them, any move perceived as suppressing alternative political voices could erode public trust in the electoral process.
Utomi and Ezekwesili also emphasised the need for INEC to maintain neutrality and uphold its constitutional responsibility of conducting free, fair and credible elections.
They urged all political stakeholders to respect democratic principles, engage in constructive dialogue and ensure that the political space remains open and competitive.
Observers say the comments reflect growing concerns among civil society and political actors about the state of Nigeria’s democracy as preparations for the next election cycle intensify.
