FG Plans Improved Security for Schools in Border, Riverine Communities
The Federal Government has unveiled plans to strengthen security in schools located in border and riverine communities across the country as part of a new national strategy aimed at safeguarding students, teachers and educational infrastructure.
The plan, which will run from 2026 to 2030, is designed to address security challenges faced by schools in vulnerable areas, particularly those affected by banditry, kidnapping, insurgency and other criminal activities.
According to government officials, the initiative will focus on deploying improved security architecture around schools, enhancing collaboration between security agencies and local communities, and strengthening early-warning and response systems.
The Federal Government said special attention would be given to schools in border areas and riverine communities, where difficult terrain and limited access have made them more susceptible to attacks and criminal infiltration.
The strategy also includes the use of technology such as surveillance systems, improved communication networks and data-driven risk assessment to monitor threats and respond swiftly to emergencies. In addition, community-based security approaches will be adopted to encourage local participation in protecting schools.
Authorities noted that the plan aligns with the Safe Schools Initiative and Nigeria’s broader commitment to ensuring uninterrupted access to education, especially for children in high-risk regions.
The government stressed that improving school security is critical to reducing out-of-school children, restoring public confidence in the education system and preventing disruptions caused by insecurity.
Education stakeholders have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention that could help protect learning environments and promote stability in affected communities.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to working with state governments, security agencies, development partners and community leaders to ensure the successful implementation of the plan nationwide.
