No Nigerian Is a Street Urchin — Peter Obi Condemns Class I
Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has condemned comments labelling his supporters as “street urchins” or “low-class Nigerians.”
In a statement posted on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, Obi said such remarks show “disdain for ordinary citizens,” stressing that his politics are built on empathy, inclusion, and respect for human dignity. He declared,
“I have never and will never look down on anyone, except to lift them up. We can only rise by lifting others.”
Obi emphasised that his political philosophy centres on humanity, compassion, and empowerment, not elitism. He noted that every Nigerian deserves dignity, education, healthcare, and the opportunity to rise out of poverty.
“No Nigerian is of no value. No Nigerian is a street urchin,” he said, describing such class-based insults as a reflection of Nigeria’s deepening inequality.
He reaffirmed his commitment to policies aimed at reducing poverty, expanding education, and improving healthcare, adding that true leadership is about lifting people up,
not mocking the weak.
