Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has approved ₦1.6 billion for the payment of gratuities owed to retired civil servants from 2012.

Speaking on Thursday in Lafia during the distribution of 100 electric vehicles and tricycles to youths across the 13 local government areas, Sule said the payment was part of his administration’s commitment to settle outstanding entitlements.

According to him, gratuities from 1996 to 2011 have already been fully paid, and the 2012 batch will now receive their benefits in full.

“This year, at the state level, we are also paying all the 2012 gratuities, 100 per cent of their money amounting to ₦1.6 billion,” he stated.

The governor also announced that the state government would support local councils with ₦600 million to enable them to pay their own retirees.

However, he cautioned the councils against overstaffing, which he identified as one of the reasons behind their financial challenges.
