The All Igbo Youth Forum (AIYF), led by its President General, Chief Chinedum Obilor, has called on President Bola Tinubu to order the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, if he hopes to secure widespread electoral support from the South East in the 2027 general elections.

Speaking at an executive meeting of the forum held on Tuesday in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, Obilor warned that failure by the Federal Government to act would prompt the group to mobilise over one million Igbo youths to take a definite stance on the upcoming elections within the next two months.

Obilor questioned why Kanu remains in detention while other separatist figures, such as Yoruba Nation activist Sunday Igboho, have regained their freedom. He also criticised South East politicians for what he described as their indifference towards Kanu’s continued detention.

> “If the President heeds our call and releases Kanu, we will mobilise massive support for him,” Obilor stated. “But if he refuses, he will also hear from us.”

The AIYF leader further argued that the poor performance of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the South East during the 2023 general elections was largely due to the Federal Government’s refusal to release Kanu.
