Students of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Oyo State, staged a protest on Tuesday at the Oyo State Government Secretariat, opposing the renaming of the institution after the late former Governor Omololu Olunloyo.

The protest disrupted movement along the busy Sango–Eleyele Road in Ibadan, leaving hundreds of commuters stranded. The students also blocked the main gates of the institution, demanding the reversal of the name change.

Governor Seyi Makinde had recently announced the renaming of the institution to Omololu Olunloyo Polytechnic in honour of the late former governor, who died at the age of 89. Olunloyo, notably, was the first Ibadan indigene to serve as the governor of the old Oyo State.

The protest reflects students’ dissatisfaction with the decision, as they called on the state government to reconsider.
