Tensions have reached a boiling point within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as rival factions prepare to hold parallel National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Caucus meetings in Abuja today.
The crisis centres on the position of National Secretary and the party’s disputed 100th NEC meeting. According to party sources, the Board of Trustees is also expected to meet in a bid to find a resolution.
On Sunday, acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, embattled National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu, and some members of the National Working Committee (NWC) met at Wadata and reaffirmed their position that an expanded National Caucus meeting should be held instead of the NEC meeting.
Later the same day, a larger group of NWC members — including Deputy National Chairman (South) Taofeek Arapaja, National Vice Chairman (South East) Ali Odefa, acting National Secretary Setonji Koshoedo, and others — insisted the NEC meeting must proceed today as originally planned, with Koshoedo remaining as acting National Secretary.
The divide reflects deeper power struggles within the party. The camp led by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, backed by Governors Peter Mbah (Enugu), Douye Diri (Bayelsa), Ademola Adeleke (Osun), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), and other senior figures, opposes Anyanwu’s return and supports going ahead with the NEC meeting.
