2027: Tinubu gives ministers, appointees March 31 resignation deadline
President Bola Tinubu has directed all political appointees under his administration who intend to contest elective positions in the 2027 general elections to resign from their offices on or before March 31, 2026.
The directive was contained in a circular issued by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), stating that the decision is in line with the provisions of Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, and the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for party primaries.
According to the circular signed by the SGF, Senator George Akume, the resignation requirement applies to a wide range of presidential appointees. These include ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior special assistants, special assistants, personal assistants, as well as directors-general and chief executive officers of federal parastatals, agencies, commissions and government-owned companies.
The document further instructed all affected officials to submit their formal resignation letters through the Office of the SGF not later than the stipulated deadline to enable them participate in party primaries or seek nomination for elective offices.
Tinubu explained that the measure is aimed at ensuring compliance with electoral laws, promoting transparency in the political process and creating a level playing field for all aspirants ahead of the 2027 polls.
He urged concerned officials to adhere strictly to the directive, reiterating his administration’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and supporting credible electoral processes.
The development comes as political activities gradually intensify nationwide following the release of the electoral timetable by INEC. Analysts say the directive could reshape the political landscape as several appointees may step down to pursue elective ambitions in the coming months.
