2027 Tensions: Buhari’s CPC Bloc May Abandon APC

The death of former President Muhammadu Buhari has reignited political uncertainty within the All Progressives Congress (APC), particularly among his staunch supporters from the now-defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), which he founded in 2009.

Since President Bola Tinubu assumed office in 2023, CPC loyalists have seen their influence diminish, with prominent figures like former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai and ex-SGF Babachir Lawal openly opposing Tinubu’s rumored second-term ambitions.

Analysts now predict that the APC may struggle to hold onto Buhari’s loyal base — long estimated at over 12 million — as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) intensifies efforts to attract his followers. The move follows remarks by former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar, who said Buhari’s death could reshape Nigeria’s political future.

“This marks a significant shift in our political landscape,” Abdulsalami noted. “The passing of Buhari will inevitably change Nigerian politics — hopefully for the better.”

ADC interim National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, claimed many of Buhari’s closest allies have already aligned with their coalition.

“Most of Buhari’s loyalists are already with us,” he said. “His death will only solidify their resolve. This coalition reflects his wishes.”
