2027: Obi formally declares for ADC, vows to defy ballot rigging
Former Anambra State Governor and presidential hopeful, Peter Obi, has formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election under the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), stating that he is entering the race with strong confidence in victory.
Obi made the declaration during a political gathering attended by supporters and party stakeholders, where he reaffirmed his commitment to democratic values, transparency and electoral reforms. According to him, the decision to run again is driven by what he described as the urgent need to reposition Nigeria’s economy, strengthen institutions and restore public trust in governance.
Speaking to party faithful, the former governor stressed that the 2027 election must be conducted in a free and fair manner, warning against any form of ballot manipulation. He said his campaign would focus on mobilising citizens to participate actively in the democratic process while ensuring that votes count.
Obi maintained that Nigeria’s future depends on credible leadership capable of tackling economic hardship, unemployment and insecurity. He noted that his political movement would prioritise youth empowerment, investment in education and responsible fiscal management if elected into office.
The ADC leadership welcomed his declaration, describing it as a significant boost for the party ahead of the next general elections. Party officials said ongoing consultations were aimed at building a broad coalition to challenge the dominance of major political parties.
Political observers believe Obi’s entry into the race could reshape the dynamics of the 2027 contest, especially as opposition parties continue discussions on possible alliances. However, analysts also noted that the election season is still some distance away, and alliances and party alignments may evolve.
Meanwhile, reactions have continued to trail the announcement, with supporters praising his resolve while critics questioned the feasibility of his electoral strategy under a new platform. Electoral stakeholders have also renewed calls for reforms that would guarantee transparency, improve voter confidence and prevent irregularities.
As political activities gradually gather momentum, attention is expected to shift toward party primaries, policy debates and coalition-building efforts that will shape the run-up to the 2027 presidential election.
