Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has said he regrets supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election, admitting that the decision did not deliver the outcome he had hoped for.
Makinde made the remark while speaking during a recent engagement, where he reflected on his political choices ahead of the last general election. According to the governor, his support for Tinubu was based on expectations that aligned with national unity, economic stability, and good governance, but events after the election have fallen short of those expectations.
“I supported President Tinubu in the 2023 election with the hope that things would turn out better for Nigerians. Looking at the situation now, I can say that the outcome is not what I expected,” Makinde was quoted as saying.
The Oyo State governor, a prominent member of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), was one of the key figures whose backing of Tinubu, a candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), generated widespread debate at the time. His decision was seen as a major cross-party political move during the election.
Makinde’s latest comments have reignited political discussions, with many interpreting his statement as a subtle critique of the current administration’s handling of economic and governance challenges facing the country.
While he did not go into specific details about the policies or actions that influenced his regret, Makinde emphasised the need for leaders at all levels to prioritise the welfare of Nigerians and deliver tangible improvements in living conditions.
The Presidency has yet to officially respond to Makinde’s comments as of the time of filing this report.
