The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has pledged to work closely with the newly elected chairmen of the six Area Councils in Abuja to ensure accelerated development and improved service delivery across the territory.
Wike gave the assurance during a meeting with the council chairmen shortly after the conclusion of the FCT Area Council elections. He congratulated the winners and urged them to put aside political differences and focus on governance, stressing that residents of the territory expect visible improvements in infrastructure, security, healthcare and education.
The minister noted that the FCT Administration was ready to partner with the councils in implementing people-oriented projects, adding that cooperation between the two tiers of government would be key to achieving sustainable development. He emphasised that the era of unnecessary rivalry and delays in executing projects must give way to a new phase of collaboration.
According to him, the administration would provide the necessary support and policy direction required to enhance grassroots governance, particularly in rural communities where access to basic amenities remains a challenge. He also called on the chairmen to prioritise transparency and accountability in the management of public resources.
Wike further stated that the FCT Administration would monitor ongoing and new projects to ensure timely completion and value for money. He warned that any council found to be negligent in its responsibilities would be held accountable.
Responding on behalf of the council chairmen, one of the newly elected officials expressed appreciation for the ministerโs commitment to partnership, promising that the councils would align with the FCT Administrationโs development agenda. He added that the chairmen were determined to deliver the dividends of democracy to residents and foster peace and unity across the territory.
The meeting is seen by political observers as a move to strengthen coordination between the FCT Administration and local governments, especially as the new council leadership prepares to assume office in the coming weeks.
