President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated the winners of the recently concluded elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and the by-elections held in Kano and Rivers states, describing the outcomes as a reflection of Nigeriaโs growing democratic maturity.
In a statement released by the Presidency, Tinubu commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for organising what he described as largely peaceful and credible exercises. He also praised security agencies for maintaining order throughout the voting process, noting that their professionalism contributed to the calm atmosphere witnessed across polling centres.
The President specifically acknowledged the role played by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, whose leadership he said helped to strengthen grassroots political engagement and administrative coordination during the elections in Abuja. Tinubu stated that Wikeโs efforts demonstrated the importance of collaboration between federal authorities and local stakeholders in sustaining democratic stability.
According to the statement, the President urged all victorious candidates to view their success as a call to service rather than personal triumph. He emphasised the need for inclusiveness, transparency and accountability in governance, encouraging them to prioritise policies that would improve infrastructure, economic opportunities and social welfare in their respective constituencies.
Tinubu also called on candidates who did not emerge victorious to accept the results in the spirit of democracy and pursue any grievances through lawful channels. He stressed that political competition should not undermine national unity, adding that Nigeriaโs democratic journey requires constructive opposition and mutual respect among political actors.
Observers have noted that the elections were closely watched due to their potential implications for future political alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections. While some opposition groups raised concerns over certain procedural issues, many civil society organisations acknowledged improvements in logistics and voter turnout compared to previous exercises.
Reaffirming his administrationโs commitment to strengthening democratic institutions, Tinubu pledged continued support for electoral reforms that would enhance transparency and public trust in the system. He urged Nigerians to remain actively engaged in civic processes, describing participation in elections as a vital pillar of nation-building.
The President concluded by expressing optimism that the newly elected officials would work across party lines to deliver meaningful development and foster peace in their communities.
