Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election on the platform of the African Democratic Congress, stating that he remains confident of winning the poll.
Obi, who made the declaration during a recent political engagement with supporters and stakeholders, said his decision was driven by a desire to offer what he described as โcompetent and accountable leadershipโ aimed at addressing Nigeriaโs economic and governance challenges.
According to him, the country requires a new direction focused on productivity, transparency, and prudent management of public resources. He maintained that his vision for Nigeria centres on investment in human capital development, job creation, and strengthening institutions to rebuild public trust.
The former presidential candidate emphasised that the ADC provides a viable platform for coalition-building among opposition figures seeking political reforms ahead of the next general elections. He added that ongoing consultations with party leaders and supporters across the country were part of efforts to consolidate a broad-based movement.
Obi also urged Nigerians, particularly young people, to remain actively engaged in the democratic process, noting that sustainable change would require collective participation and responsible leadership.
While supporters at the event expressed optimism about his chances, political analysts say the announcement could reshape the dynamics of opposition politics as preparations for the 2027 race gradually gather momentum.
Meanwhile, reactions from other political actors are expected in the coming days as parties continue internal alignments and strategic planning ahead of the election season.
